Kurtu was born in 1956 in the town of Ungeny on the border of Moldova and Romania. He attended the Kishinev art college before enrolling at the Moscow Institute of Cinematography (WGIK) department of cartoons, where he graduated from in 1982.
1986 – member of FECO (Federation of cartoon unions of Europe).
1987 – graduated the course for producers and script writers(Goskino), Moscow. As a screenwriter and director he made seven animated films. During this entire time he also made caricatures, publishing in leading satire magazines in Russia (Krokodil), Germany (Eulenspiegel), Romania (Urzika), and his homeland of Moldova (Ciparusch).
1990 – member of Art union of USSR and Moldowa, 1994 – member of Jurnalist union of Moldowa.
Since 1994, when he already was a renowned artist, Kurtu expanded the scope of his personal and artistic life and relocated to Berlin with his family. Now he is the owner of art gallery (Kurtu–Kunst) in Berlin with his wife, also artist, and continues to work successfully for a large number of newspapers and magazines: Partner, Gartenfreund, Stiftung Warentest, Europa-Express(chief artist). Over the course of his life, the artist has so far been awarded more than a hundred prizes, medals and diplomas of international exhibitions, as well as contests of caricaturists in many countries.

Valeriu Kurtu wurde 1956 im Städtchen Ungeny an der rumänisch-moldawischen
Grenze geboren. Er besuchte die Kunstfachschule in Kischinev und studierte anschließend an der Hochschule für Kinematographie (WGIK) im Fachbereich Trickfilm in Moskau und machte dort 1982 seinen Abschluss.
1986 wurde er Mitglied der FECO (Federation of Cartoonists Organisations).
Er beendete 1987 den 2-jährigen Kurs für Regie und Drehbuch in Moskau.
Als Autor und Regisseur drehte er sieben Animationsfilme. Zur gleichen Zeit publizierte er Karikaturen in bedeutenden Magazinen und Karikaturzeitschriften wie
Krokodil (Russland), Eulenspiegel (Deutschland), Ursika (Rumänien) und in seinem Heimatland Moldawien in der Zeitschrift Ciparusch.
1990 trat er dem Kunstverband der UDSSR und Moldawien bei und wurde 1994 Mitglied des Journalistenverbands von Moldawien.
1994, als er schon ein anerkannter Künstler war, zog er mit seiner Familie nach Berlin.
2003 eröffnete er mit seiner Frau, die ebenfalls Künstlerin ist, eine eigene Galerie (Kurtu-Kunst). Es folgten zahlreiche Publikationen für Ausstellungen, in Zeitungen und Magazinen (Partner, Gartenfreund, Stiftung Warentest, Europa-Express).
Mehr als 100 Preise, Medaillen und Auszeichnungen erhält er bei Karikaturwettbewerben weltweit.
